Upgrading to Android 7.0 Nougat
The Samsung Galaxy A7 SM- A720F was released with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow when the world was crazy about Android 7.0 Nougat. To cope up with the fast-changing world, Samsung finally rolled out the Android 7.0 Nougat last August 2017. The latest update comes with the build number A720FXXU2BQI7 and security patch date of 2017-08-01.
What’s with Android 7.0 Update?
This major OS update for SM-A720F provides a new user experience. It also brings tons of new features such as multi-window support, the addition of the Samsung pass, and Always On Display features. The usability of the notification feature and quick settings button has also been improved. Users can also enjoy the addition of Dual Messenger along with bug fixes and improved speed of app installation.
Samsung rolled out the Android 7.0 Nougat to users all over the world via OTA ( over the air) update. Here in the Philippines, the update was released last September but some users are still waiting for the OTA notification. The solution is to update the device manually using Odin3 application with an official Android N firmware. You can now enjoy the full features of Nougat on Samsung Galaxy A7 2017 by following the guide below.
Samsung Galaxy A7 2017 Manual Update Guide
This guide will teach you on how to manually flash an official Samsung firmware to your Galaxy A7 2017. It can also be used to fix bootloop, hang on logo, and other software problems. This method can also be used to fix monkey test and time virus infection and downgrading the device to a lower Android version.
Disclaimer: We are not responsible for any damage while using this flashing tutorial. Do it at your own risk!
Before proceeding to the flashing process, make sure you have enough battery charge on your device. You do not want a dead phone because the battery juice runs out in the middle of flashing. Charge your phone to at least 70% or more before attempting to flash the firmware.
Backup all the important files. Transfer those files to your SD card or to your computer.
Prepare a Windows computer with a fast and stable internet connection. The firmware file is about 2.4 GB, make sure your data allocation is enough, or your internet is unmetered.
Do not forget to prepare a working USB cable. Use the supplied data cable since Samsung Galaxy A7 2017 uses a USB Type-C 1.0 reversible connector.
Lastly, download the necessary files from the link below and extract/install them on your PC.
Downloading the Official Android 7.0 Update
There are many websites today offering free downloads of Samsung official firmware but the most popular sites are www.sammobile.com and www. samsung-firmware.org. While sammobile is more popular of the two, I prefer the latter because you can download the firmware files without registration.
To download the official Android 7.0 Nougat update for Samsung Galaxy A7 2017, go to www.samsung-firmware.org website. On the model selection box, type SM-A720F then select your desired region. If you are in the Philippines and you prefer an open line firmware, choose the XTC region.
After clicking the Download button, you’ll be taken on a page where you can download the file with different speed. The unmetered option is a premium service while the slow download option is for the free users.
Extract the downloaded firmware archive on your computer. The file types that Odin uses are *.bin,*.tar and *.tar.md5.
USB Drivers Installation and Odin3 Preparation
Download the Samsung USB Drivers then install it on your Windows machine. It will make the communication between your device and the computer possible. Without the USB drivers, Odin3 will not detect your Samsung device when plugged via USB cable.
Odin3 is a free software used by Samsung devices to flash firmware and recovery images. Download the file from the link above and extract the zip archive using WinRaR, WinZip, 7Zip or any file archiver. After extracting the files, hover your mouse over the Odin3 executable file and right click. Run the file as an Administrator.
Booting into Download Mode
Instead of Fastboot, Samsung is using the Download mode to flash stock firmware to their devices. To enter Download mode to any Samsung device, turn off your phone. After a few seconds, press and hold volume down+home and power buttons simultaneously. Wait for it to reboot in download mode. Press Volume Up to continue to Download Mode.
Connect your Device
While in the Download mode, connect your Samsung Galaxy A7 2017 to your PC using the stock USB data cable or any USB Type-C connector. Wait until your phone is detected by Odin3. If it fails to do so, just reinstall the Samsung USB Drivers or check your data cable. Odin3 will recognize your device as another COM Port. At the lower-left of Odin interface, it should show a message that says “Added!”
Go to the Options tab then check the “Auto Reboot” and “F. Reset Time” options. Leave the re-partition option unchecked. I repeat do not tick the re-partition option!
Flash the Firmware
On the Odin3 interface, you can now click the AP tab and load the official Samsung Galaxy A7 2017 Nougat firmware. Look for the .tar.md5 file from the folder where you extracted the firmware zip.
Click on START to begin the flashing process. Wait until the flashing is done. This will take some time. Do not turn off the phone or disconnect it from the computer! Wait until Odin3 says that flashing is successful. You should see a big green box saying “PASSED”.
Congratulations! You successfully upgraded your Samsung Galaxy A7 SM-A720F to Android 7.0 Nougat.
