The official Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow firmware update is now live for the Samsung Galaxy J5 (SM-J500H) but it is yet to be released here in the Philippines. The new Marshmallow update is loaded with features like Always-on Display, Now on Tap, Doze Mode, New App Permissions and lots of other changes and tweaks that should improve the overall performance of your device.

If you’re looking to update your Galaxy J5 SM-J500H with the new firmware without waiting for the OTA files, then we can do it manually using firmware from other country. Don’t worry, there are users who already tried and their devices are working just fine.

This tutorial is for the Samsung Galaxy J5 SM-J500H only!. Please check the model of your device under the Settings>About phone section.

Do it at your own risk. I’m not responsible for any bricked or damaged device while using this tutorial. Please follow the instructions carefully.

How to Update Samsung Galaxy J5 (SM-J500H) to Marshmallow for Philippine users

Make sure you have at least 50% battery charge on your device, a Windows PC and a working USB cable.

1. Download all the files from the link below.

2. Extract the contents from the firmware archive then save the files on your PC.

3. Extract the Odin zip file and save the contents to your PC.

4. Install the Samsung USB drivers on your PC to allow your smartphone to be detected by the PC and Odin to successfully flash the new firmware.

5. Enable USB Debugging on your SM-J500H device. Go to Settings>About Phone then tap the build number 7 times to reveal the Developer option. Go to the developer option then activate USB Debugging.

6. Power off your Samsung Galaxy J5 SM-J500H device.

7. Run Odin3 v3.10.6 .exe on your PC.

8. Boot your device in Download Mode:

  1. Turn off your Galaxy J5.
  2. Press and hold volume down+home and power buttons simultaneously.
  3. Wait for it to reboot in download mode. Press Volume Up to continue to Download Mode

9. Connect your device to the PC via USB cable then wait until Odin recognize the phone. If it fails to do so, reinstall the Samsung USB drivers.

10. On the Odin interface, open the ‘options’ tab in order to disable ‘re-partition’ option.

11. Click on AP option in order to locate and load the firmware updating file. Find .tar.md5 firmware file and load it in Odin. Please don’t edit other default Odin settings.

12. Click on START to begin the updating process of Android 6.0.1 for your smartphone. Wait until the Marshmallow update is done. This will take some time.

13. When the update is finished, you can see the PASS alert shown in Odin. Once completed, your phone will reboot.

Congratulations! You now have the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow on your Samsung Galaxy J5  SM-J500H device.
